7th Son Grenache Shiraz - 2018

Gorgeously ripe and tremendously expressive, the wine shows sweet plum, spiced cherry, vanilla, white pepper and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate that’s plump and silky. It’s richly composed and styled, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2030. At its best: now to 2032.

This is an unusual blend but it absolutely sings thanks to the combination of plush fruit from grenache and shiraz with the rustic flair of sagrantino. The wine is deeply coloured and flavoured with expressive fruits – blackberry, baked earth and dark cherry, all well integrated with sweet oak. The palate is then full-bodied and power-packed; luscious fruit kept in check by leathery complexity and a slight acid kick before a long and supple finish. A great drink now and over the next five years or so.

Grenache, shiraz, sagrantino. This is good. Taking advantage of the arsenal of tannin ) imparted by the smidgeon of sagrantino (6%) in the blend) raspberry bon-bon, root spice, violet and briar are fuelled by a core of 62% grenache, the rest shiraz. The extraction is perfect, facilitating a pulpy flow; the reductive handling is just right, imbuing tension. Very good drinking attesting to a fine evolution of the style.

Blend of Grenache, Shiraz and a small amount of Sagrantino. It offers a core of dusty/spicy licorice flavour with sweet raspberry/redcurrant over the top. It’s pretty stern with tannin but in tandem with that fleshy fruit sweetness it seems welcoming. I like what I’m tasting here. It’s savoury, sweet and stern at once; again we’re in characterful territory here.

While you’ll mostly see GSM as the Med-blend from this region, of course there’s no surprise that this comes with an Italian twist: 62% Blewitt Springs grenache, 32% Vales White Valley (Southern Vales) shiraz, and 6% sagrantino. In other words, a fuller bodied variation on the usual combo, the sagrantino bringing some muscle along with the wine’s abundance of rich fruit and tannin feel. A big red wine lover’s style of grenache blend.
Tony Love, Wine Pilot November 2020

This has a rich, blue-fruited nose, offering plums, blueberries and cassis, as well as some floral notes. The palate has a bold, flavorful feel with soft yet intense dark-fruit flavors. A spicy edge to the finish. A blend of 62% grenache, 32% shiraz and 6% sagrantino. Drink now.

A blend of 62% Grenache, 32% Shiraz and 6% Sagrantino, the 2018 7th Son Grenache Shiraz Sagrantino is a large-scaled but juicy, succulent, fruit-filled offering. Medium to full-bodied, almost creamy in texture, it’s loaded with cherry fruit, framed by silky tannins and finishes with mouthwatering acids.
