2021 Masso Montepulciano Reviews

Released in September 2022 as a Wine Club and Cellar Door exclusive, Mitolo’s inaugural 2021 Masso Montepulciano has garnered outstanding reviews from consumers and critics alike – including a 96-point review from Halliday Wine Companion's Ned Goodwin.

Like the Mitolo family, this variety hails from the Abruzzo region east of Rome. Mitolo's fruit for 2021 Masso was sourced from the rocky profile and Mediterranean-like climates of the Lopresti Ridgehaven Vineyard in southern McLaren Vale.

Arguably the finest wine at this address. Beautifully crafted, assuaging monte's tendency toward an acerbic dryness by promoting its floral freshness with gentle extraction and ample whole berries. Embraces the variety's sinuous, ferruginous tannins, sans perceivable new oak nor forfeit of power. In essence, not too much messing about. Very good drinking. The Italianates, the strong suit here.

Mitolo's Masso is a unique and striking 2021 Montepulciano. Opaque in colour. It is an immense and luscious wine bursting with decadent cherry ripe and blackberry fruits, with a dusting of dried herbs that add a nice savoury edge, all supported by ample toasty oak. It is bold with robust tannins and mouth-filling, dark berry fruits lifted by acidity through a decently long finish. It is more McLaren Vale than Montepulciano for sure.

Deep red-purple colour; with dry-roasted nut aromas overlying black fruits and brown spice nuances. Full-bodied with abundant tannins which dry the palate and add a firm grip to the finish. Robust and gutsy red wine.
Huon Hooke, The Real Review, December 2022
