Angela Shiraz - 2020
94 POINTS
The 2020 Small Batch Series Angela Shiraz is made in an aromatic style: it is perfumed and elegant. The fruit is sourced from the southern part of the Vale. In the mouth, the wine sings with blue fruits and vibrancy. It has notes of deli meat, aniseed, blackberry and plush fruit—powerful and neat. This is quite lovely, with coulis and pink peppercorn— moreish.

Splendidly fruited and fragrant with dark plum, blueberry, rich floral and roasted nut aromas with a spicy overtone. The succulent palate delivers excellent weight and fleshy texture, beautifully framed by fine, polished tannins, offering terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2035.

Modern shiraz from a warm place, albeit riding a sleigh of tension. A clench of reduction confers floral and iodine scents, evincing an air of somewhere considerably cooler. Boysenberry sweetness across the mid-palate suggests otherwise. Loads of salami smokiness, liquorice, lavender, clove and thyme, too. A little drying at the finale, but pretty convincing.

After tasting, I try and share the bottles with friends. This one, when one of my friends set eyes on it, was rejected immediately, in horror. I was rather surprised and asked why. Turns out that Angela was the name of his ex-wife and he was having nothing to do with it (he’d already spent way too much money on anything to do with an Angela). Those less offendable or without an ex of such a name, will find this a delicious McLaren Vale Shiraz. After pressing, the wine went to hogsheads, 70% ‘seasoned’, 25% new French and 5% new American, all for 16 months. From a vineyard known as Sandra’s Block. Dark maroon hue, there are coffee bean notes, chocolate, blackberries, game, smoked meats, cloves and aniseed. There is focus and balance here, a line of fine acidity and very good length. Good ripeness throughout. Enjoy for the next six to eight years, unless, of course, the name puts you off.

Opaque in colour. The 2020 Angela is a big, generous, crowd pleasing Shiraz from Mitolo. The nose offers chocolate, blackberry and liquorice aromas with a nice touch of savoury spice and toasty oak. Dry and full-flavoured, this has been well constructed with oak tannins providing length and backbone before fading away a little on the finish.

Deep crimson. Intense blackberry, cassis, mulberry aromas with dark chocolate liquorice, hint flinty notes. Fresh dark berry fruits some graphite notes, underlying praline/espresso complexity and fine chewy firm tannins with some flinty notes at the finish.

Opaque in colour and another big, generous crowd pleasing style from Mitolo with lashings of chocolate, blackberry and liquorice with a nice touch of savoury spice and toasty oak. Dry, and full-flavoured, this has been well constructed with oak tannins providing length and backbone before just fading away a little on the finish.

Good depth of colour. This smells ripe and clean, fairly straightforward with berry, spice and cedar aromas. It's medium bodied, and the flavours are well poised between ripeness and a fresh tang. Tannins are moderate and in good balance.
