G.A.M. Shiraz - 2019
94 POINTS
A rich wine that plies a pulpy jubilance laden with blackcurrant, blueberry, anise and baking spices alongside a bracken density doused with coffee grind and cocoa nibs. The result is a confluence of freshness, svelte tannins, a well-positioned curb of oak and a nourishing finish that will please traditionalists, as much as lovers of fresher contemporary styles.

The 2019 G.A.M. Shiraz is a classic McLaren Shiraz: it is chocolaty, textural and fleshy and sourced from Whites Valley— a tiny pocket. The softness in the mouth becomes more clear once we know there is a little bit of American oak in the maturation mix. This is plush and intense, bloody and ferrous yet quite fine through the finish It is earthy and open-knit. Smart. Savoury

Evenly saturated purple-red colour looks very intense. The nose is rather raw, with concentrated blackberry, plum, cassis and clove aromas, dressed in notable vanillin oak. It tastes intense, full flavoured, yet not overwhelming, and its fine texture adds real charm. Tannins are moderate and well integrated.

There is a lot to love about this 2019 G.A.M. Shiraz as it packs impressive levels of flavour, tremendous energy and brightness of fruit. Opaque in colour, the wine displays richly concentrated aromas of blueberry, liquorice, blackberry and dark chocolate with supportive, sweet oak. Well made and pitched, the 2019 offers lavish levels of black cherry flavour with excellent purity topped by mocha oak. The structure is good and well-integrated, offering some aging potential, but why bother when it tastes so good right now?

Medium deep crimson. Aniseed, black cherry aromas with roasted walnut/espresso notes. Sweet and savoury wine with ample black cherry, star anise/liquorice flavours, fine loose-knit tannins and well-balanced roasted walnut/mocha notes. Finishes chewy firm with earthy complexity.

There is lots to love about this vintage of Mitolo G.A.M. as it packs not only impressive levels of flavour but there is also great energy and brightness of fruit. Opaque in colour, the wine displays richly concentrated aromas of blueberry, liquorice, blackberry and dark chocolate with sweet oak in very good support. Well made and pitched, it then offers lavish levels of black cherry flavour with excellent purity topped by mocha oak. Structure is good and well integrated offering some aging potential but why bother when it tastes so good right now.

GAM has been a very successful wine in 100 Best over the years, and I believe it is one of McLaren Vale’s most expressive and delicious Shiraz wines. The 2019 vintage has risen to a new level of finesse and complexity. Mitolo wines are always glossy and succulent, making them tender and mouth-coating, and this is achieved through great winemaking. But what I admire most about this particular vintage is that in addition to the stunning textural attributes of this wine and the resonant, deeply fruit-driven Shiraz theme, there are a multitude of McLaren Vale signals that have not been lost or ignored in this wine. You find yourself drinking a fully functioning GPS, and if you shut your eyes, I bet you will see Silver Sands, Aldinga or Sellicks and smell the ozone, brush, dune flowers and perhaps even the faint tang of a perfectly poured espresso at Little Wolf. Brilliant, classy, plush and honed, 2019 GAM is the aura of McLaren Vale added to the essence of elite Vale Shiraz.
