G.A.M. Shiraz - 2020
95 Points
This is superbly ripe and enticing on the nose, showing blackberry, violet, clove and roasted hazelnut aromas. The generously flavoursome palate offers silky texture backed by finely infused tannins, making it delicious and highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2037.

Fruit from two blocks of the estate vineyard; matured for 16 months in new and seasoned oak before blending and four additional months on old oak (the final blend was 15% new French and 5% new American). There’s signature concentrated and brooding notes, with the fruit intensity that clay soils often yield, though it’s all handled rather nimbly, with fruit picked for both presence and vigour, oak present, but it’s a carefully tailored fit. Blackberry, red plum, dried blueberry and a tarry minerality, dark cocoa and anise, the palate supple but savoury, drawing long.

This is good Vale shiraz. Powerful, sure, but the ripe fruit and extract are compressed into a foil of tension by impeccably massaged tannins, peppery verve and well-placed oak. Lilac, clove, charcuterie, tapenade, blue and black fruits and all the trimmings. A lithe, compact finish of considerable detail and refinement without the drying oak tannins of other wines in the range. This cuvee has stepped up in recent years. Drink or hold.

This terrific McLaren Vale Shiraz is named after Frank Mitolo’s Gemma, Alexander and Marco, which seems just a tad prosaic in comparison with how and why some of the other wins got their monikers but rather, nonetheless. The wine spends sixteen months in new French oak (15%), 5% American oak and the remainder a mix of older French and American. An opaque maroon hue. We have notes of black fruits, bay leaves, chocolate, coffee grinds, maraschino cherries, chocolate mud-cake and cassis. A supple cushiony texture with gossamer-silky tannins. Hints of bergamot emerge on the palate, with a flicker of raspberries. There is an alluring plushness with exceptional length. This should provide joy for ten years.

Dark, inky and youthful in appearance. Lifted aromas of blackberry, stewed plum, dried herbs, anise and sweet spice. Full bodied, sweetly fruited and plush. Flavours of plum, mulberry, sweet oak and spice are all at play here. Tannins have purpose and deliver structure and the acidity is bright and snappy.
