Jester Malbec - 2019

93 POINTS
This is wonderfully fruited and brooding, showing dark fruit richness with nuances of game, dark spice and tapenade on the nose, leading to a richly flavoursome palate that’s dense and silky. A bold expression offering gorgeous drinking. At its best: now to 2031
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit. March 2021

Take a drive around McLaren Vale and it is clear that this is a very special place. The odd monstrous gum tree shows the richness of the local environment and what this place is capable of – flavour packed wines, which suits Malbec perfectly. Deeply coloured this is a typically bold malbec although in a drink young style made from fruit grown near Port Wilunga. Sweet blackberry, chocolate and violet aromas with a slight green herbal edge lead to a dry, full-bodied and fleshy palate. It’s a little tarry too with liquorice and spicy oak all in the mix. There is also a nice hit of tannins that give backbone to its rich fruit. Drink young with flame-grilled beef from a classic Argentinian barbecue.

Deep, lurid violet. Fresh dark berries, cherry and a hint of liquorice on the expressive nose. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering bitter cherry and blueberry flavours that spread out and turn sweeter with air. Subtle tannins frame a long, smooth finish that echoes the blue fruit note.

Sticks pretty much to the approach for the richer reds of this tier: cool open-top ferments for 6 days with pumpovers twice daily, before maturation in used French (60%) and American oak. Sour-cherry pith, boysenberry and lilac scents segue to a firm curb of vanillan oak tannins that mark the palate. Some vegetal lift. Feels more mid weighted than full, despite the labelled alcohol. Plenty of fruit and savouriness all at once.
Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion. August 2021
