Jester Malbec - 2021

94 Points
Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the bouquet shows black/blueberry, violet, game and warm spice aromas. The palate is fruit-expressive and richly textured delivering excellent weight and grainy tannins, making it sturdy and lingering with delicious flavours. At its best: now to 2031.

Yet another very good malbec that was submitted to this tasting. Lots of ripe red fruit with that slightly rhubarb character. It's juicy and plush with a firmer tannin and understated oak factor. Full-bodied with deep penetrating flavours delivered with a deft softness of touch.

This wine, from a vineyard in the Sellicks Road sub-region of McLaren Vale, spent 14 months in a combination of 60% French and 40% American oak hogsheads. An opaque purple. There is dense fruit here with notes of blackberries, mulberries, chocolate and mocha. Big and bold and as we move to the palate, notes of plums, bay leaves and aniseed begin to emerge. A fine line of bright acidity, slightly firm tannins, there is good focus with concentration, drive and length. The wine maintains its intensity for the full journey. This is a really good and good value Malbec.

The best wine of this tier by a mile. Pulpy and plush, with an effusive chord of energy tying an attack of violet, blueberry and boysenberry to a finish of poise and generosity, smattered with garden herbs for savoury perk. Really good drinking at this sort of price.

Electric purple colour. Glass staining. Fresh, raw and very ripe aromas of sundry dark fruits and graphite with a banana young-wine overtone. Full bodied and well endowed with tannin giving it a drying, firm but not astringent texture. A touch raw but has plenty of potential to soften off, mellow and build a bit of complexity. Long, long carry with generous but balanced alcohol.
