Jester Shiraz - 2021
93 Points
Great value McLaren Vale Shiraz from a sensational vintage. After a cool fermentation, the wine spent 14 months in a mix of French (75%) and American (25%) oak hogsheads. We have notes of mocha, spices, plums, coffee beans, chocolate, blackberries, tobacco leaves and aniseed. A richly flavoured palate, which is really rather attractive. Good focus, balance and length with silky tannins. There is generosity and richness here. Cracking value. Enjoy over the next six to ten years. There can be a reluctance to give wines at lower price points high scores, but this one deserves it.

It's gorgeously ripe and inviting on the nose with blackberry, game, warm spice and roasted hazelnut aromas. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and silky texture, well framed by finely infused tannins, offering delectable drinking. At its best: now to 2031.

It was a marvellous year in McLaren Vale with wines even at the lower price point showing remarkably vibrant and flavoursome characters. This is generous but in the medium body zone with plump black and slightly blue fruits. The palate is plush and seamlessly smooth, cascading a wave of delicious fruit through to a pleasing finish.

2021 is a superb vintage and its beauty shines through the wines, from entry level to top-drawer. All the classic signatures of fine shiraz, fresher and cooler climatic of feel than its origins suggests, even at this approachable line. Blue fruits, lilac and nori. Perfumed, mid-weighted and brisk. Perfectly judged. It would be hard to find better value, irrespective of origin. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This walks a classic line, with brooding dark fruits atop ripe red ones, along with black plum skin, coffee grounds and a complexing layer of ferrous, iodine-laced earthiness. There’s a ripe, juicy richness here that’s well tempered by a fresh finish and enough tannin to make this food-friendly but also approachable solo.

The taster steps straight into the middle of a warm, spice-fuelled, black fruited, archetypal McLaren Vale Shiraz. It’s big and cuddly, warm and so very easy to enjoy. Ripe and sweet fruited with chocolatey oak and spice that goes on and on, it could have so easily got out of control, but is nicely tapered with the arrival of red fruits that join in on the palate. Tannin marshals help draw some boundaries. That dry, astringent finish is clean and well judged.

Aromas of dried herbs, spice, plum, bramble and mulberry. Bright, juicy and youthful on the palate. Fleshy dark fruits, cedary, charry oak and sweet spice are at the core. There's real generosity.
