La Spiaggia Sparkling Glera - 2023

90 Points
With the Italians pushing for us to call the grape glera rather than prosecco (for their own significant commercial reasons), this is getting ahead of the curve in nomenclature. Spiaggia means beach in Italian, and this comes from McLaren Vale’s first planting of the grape – whatever you call it – a few kilometres from the coast. It’s typically foamy, with fruit-forward immediacy, appley and floral, but also leaning into grapefruit and white peach. For me, the dosage crests above the acid a tad, but for others, the mid-palate softness will only add to the appeal, with the finish still agreeably crisp.

There's a persistent bead and creamy mousse on pouring. Aromas of apple, pear, lemon and bath salts. Fresh, lively and snappy on the palate. There's decent length and creaminess on the finish.
