Masso Montepulciano - 2021

96 POINTS
Arguably the finest wine at this address. Beautifully crafted, assuaging monte's tendency toward an acerbic dryness by promoting its floral freshness with gentle extraction and ample whole berries. Embraces the variety's sinuous, ferruginous tannins, sans perceivable new oak nor forfeit of power. In essence, not too much messing about. Very good drinking. The Italianates, the strong suit here.

The 2021 Masso Montepulciano leads with aromas of black pudding, roast meat juices, pink peppercorns and red licorice. For all the dense descriptors, there's a pleasing clarity through the finish that is like breathing space. It has a spacious finish. Rust/ferrous/iodine laces the purple fruit and produces a mineral-laden finish. This is a gorgeous wine. It is supple, spiced, elegant and balanced, with savory exotic inflections. Lingering. Very good! 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Deeply coloured, this is a unique and striking take on Montepulciano. Opaque in colour, it is an immense and luscious wine bursting with decadent cherry ripe and blackberry fruits with a dusting of dried herbs that adds a nice savoury edge, all supported by ample toasty oak. It is then bold with robust tannins and mouthfilling dark berry fruits lifted by some freshness through to a finish of decent length. It is more McLaren Vale than Montepulciano for sure.

Deep red-purple colour; with dry-roasted nut aromas overlying black fruits and brown spice nuances. Full-bodied with abundant tannins which dry the palate and add a firm grip to the finish. Robust and gutsy red wine.
