Masso Montepulciano - 2022
95 Points
Dark and impenetrable, Montepulciano takes a walk on the wilder, deeper, more full-bodied side. It’s a different interpretation to what we are generally seeing as the Australian norm, a more serious expression with ageing potential in mind. A mass of blackberries, cassis, bramble, spice and chocolate assemble on the bouquet. It’s got weight and richness in fruit on the palate, big and almost imposing, loaded in chocolate, pan forte and blackstrap liquorice. Oak is well positioned. Tannins are firm and just a little drying, taking nothing away from the powerful force of the wine.

Blackcurrants, prune plums, Nyon olive. Carob and oolong tea. Wood ear mushroom, Madagascar vanilla and violets. Linear and supple on the palate with clove, cocoa powder and the chew of Boba pearls. Tannins are grainy and astute with lingering waves of acidity. Savoury potting soil and earth. A classy wine with a natural feel to its form, it’s clear this was in the hands of someone who knows its character. Fantastic. Drink now with Osso Bucco.

Richly fruited, luscious of texture, with waves of dark cherry, blackberry and black olive, there’s a chewy muscular feel to this, an opulence perfumed with cedar, vanilla, tobacco and clove – even though the oak is mainly older, with 20% third fill. It’s an engaging, luxurious expression, fitting the house style of generosity aligned with purity, suavely persuasive tannins signing off on the accord.

Virtually opaque at the core into a deep crimson rim. Blood plum, mulberry, vanilla pod and mocha aromas. Dense and weighty with mouth-filling black and purple fruits bound by firm grainy tannins. Hints of mocha and beef stock add depth to the palate, with those powerful tannins ensuring it has tension and drive to a very long and drying finish.

Famous Italian variety that works so well in McLaren Vale. The aroma is an exotic combination of satsuma plum and dark cherry with a subtle floral note. The palate has all those black cherry and dark plummy characters delivered in a plush generous form. A dry savoury thread of tannin and acid gives it that slightly angular detail.

This 2022 Montepulciano is chunky and chocolatey with an expression that shouts its origins proudly. It delivers ample layers of maraschino cherry and blackberry aromas with sweet oak and a dusting of dried herbs. A kick of acidity then provides upfront impact before settling into a fleshy blueberry and blackberry flavoured palate to finish.
