Mescia Super McLaren 2022
96 Points
An homage to the Super Tuscan wines of the late 20th century, seen through a savoury Vale lens. 67/22/11% cabernet sauvignon/sangiovese/montepulciano, picked and vinified separately, with 20 months in oak, 67% new. Savoury it is, accented with dark spices and earthy tones, but it’s also somewhat generous and fruit intense – blackforest berries, blueberry, mulberry and preserved cherries. Those twin forces work in neat concert, balance à point. There’s also cedar, some white pepper, clove, hazelnut and fine vanillin notes. The tannins are quietly authoritative stewards of the silky texture, the length impressive. It’s a fine addition to the Mitolo canon, and another strike for winemaker Luke Mallaby.

93 Points (Outstanding)
The 2022 Mescia is the first release - the Mitolo moonshot and an exciting development for McLaren Vale. It possesses excellent composure and tightly wound power, with layers of dark cherry, blackcurrant and asphalt enveloped in quality oak. There is excellent focus of bright, layered flavour underpinned by a strong seam of fine yet firm tannins. The 2022 boasts lovely vinbrancy and, though a little shy now, it seems destined to build into something special.

91 Points
A dense, textured and concentrated blend of cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and montepulciano. Aromas of red berries, wild herbs and dried spices on the nose, following through to a medium to full body with plush tannins. Concentrated, with generous berry character and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold.
