Scylla Nero d'Avola - 2021
95 POINTS
A great example of this Sicilian variety. The trouble with nero is that it is often allowed to get too ripe, but when it's picked at the optimum time and in balance you get wine of finesse and elegance, like this one.

The 2021 Scylla Nero d'Avola opens with bright red berries, red snakes and supple, spicy tannins. In the mouth, the wine has clarity (an attribute shared by most of the Mitolo wines on the bench today) and spaciousness aplenty, paired with a lingering, fine finish. Lovely! There is pleasure here, moreishness. It has lashings of sweet, persistent fruit. It is unwavering, with a pleasing splay of garden mint inflections through the fruit. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Nero seems sublimely suited to the warmer spots of the Vale, albeit, the vines are young. If this is anything to go by, we have much to look forward to! Sourced from loams flecked with gravel, between Sellicks Hill and Willunga. A sumptuous nose of peppery kirsch, maraschino cherry and tomato bush. The palate, one of a pulpy effusiveness as much as a lithe tannic precision. This is not merely a throwback, but a generously flavoured wine of flavour, texture and imminent drinkability. Really delicious.
