Angela Shiraz - 2021
95 Points
It revels in its full flex of the variety and the accompanying woody seasoning. Dark fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, turned earth and undergrowth going on. It soars on the pulverised granite grip of tannins and lingers with its epic array of woody spice. Big vibe, big energy, big wine, and great harmony in all that. Classic stuff.

Angela is the Mitolo family matriarch (and presumably completely unrelated in every way from Scylla). One presumes she must be very happy with this fine tribute. The oak used here, with the wine spending sixteen months maturing, was 25% new French, 5% new American and 70% older hogsheads. Under diam. An opaque maroon hue, the nose offers roast meat notes, chocolate, plums, blackcurrants, spices, florals and even a whiff of orange rind. There is impressive oak integration here and the wine is well balanced. Decent length, good energy and a fine line of acidity running the full journey. Enjoy over the next six to ten years.

From Sandra’s Block in the Lopresti vineyard, 10% new French, 5% new American, the remainder seasoned. Earthy and spice-scented, this has a degree of tradition about it, leaning into blackberry, olive, red plum and cherry, studded with clove and dusted with allspice and white pepper. There’s a classic feel in its import and feel from time in oak (20 months), though an increasing house savouriness is at play, with the finish also agreeably lively.

Deep, rich, saturated red with a good tint of purple; the bouquet is toasty, earthy, nutty and gently oaky, the palate full bodied and firm, upright and balanced, with deep blackberry fruit and quite stylish in a more muscular way. Solid, bold, and slightly old-school—but good.

Delicious, creamy and fruit driven. Dark cherries, plums, grilled herbs and a hint of meat on the nose, following through to a medium body with melty tannins. Fruity, juicy and playful, with a mellow finish. Drink now.
