Savitar Shiraz - 2020
96 Points
Bold and brooding, the wine shows dark fruit richness, cedary oak, warm spice and rich floral aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers outstanding weight and depth, superbly framed by layers of chalky tannins, finishing impressively long and robust. Wonderfully flavoursome and complex with a prolonged, sturdy finish. At its best: now to 2040.

Another superb McLaren Vale Shiraz from the Mitolo team, the name here refers to a mythical dragon, which, as does the wine, offer “power, polish and an elegantly long tail”. Twenty months in oak hogsheads, 95% of which were French with 85% of those new, the remaining 5% new American. Deep maroon hue. This is rich, powerful and intense. Aromas of florals, chocolate, mocha, coffee beans, licorice, soy and beefstock. Good ripeness throughout, a seamless structure, fine acidity, good balance and very good length. There are hints of graphite on the palate. The intensity is maintained here, for the full journey. Very fine tannins. A superb Shiraz which will provide pleasure for the next ten to fifteen years.

Fruit comes off the Lopresti home block and lot 11. This is somewhat more imposing than the G.A.M, with deep blue and black fruits, spiced plum and dark cherry clad in oak (85% new French, 5% new American). There’s a lusciousness to the palate, but it’s paired with savoury tension, with clove, anise, cured meat, coal dust and a rugged earthiness accenting. Everything feels in place, though a little patience is required.

Fine aromas of mace, clove, anise, mint and biltong. Northern Rhone of feel, until the drying oak tannins at the finish. A carapace of spicy grape tannins compresses blue fruits into a foil of savouriness. A compact latticework that bodes well for mid-term aging. A rich, albeit, savoury wine of restraint and impressive length.

This luscious 2020 McLaren Vale Shiraz is an earlier drinking vintage of Savitar which offers up rich and dense aromas of plush blackberry and chocolate against a backdrop of of warm granite tones. There is an attractive overall balance with smoked meat and earthy coal fire complexity well supported by supple tannins right through to a lengthy and open-knit finish. Mitolo fans will not be disappointed.
