Savitar Shiraz - 2021
95 Points
From Lopresti vineyard lots 10 and 11, which are characterised by Biscay clays over limestone. This was destemmed and crushed, with a relatively cool ferment; raised in hogsheads, with 55% new French oak and 5% new American for 20 months. This needs a little more time than the G.A.M., with its luscious sweep of fruit bound a little by a fine seam of vigorous acidity and grippy tannins – it is built to age though. Red and dark berries, plum and mocha, vanilla and clove, anise. There’s positive development ahead of this but give it a year or so to mesh.

Apparently, Savitar is a mythical dragon. Nothing too mythical about the wine, it is real and really good drinking. It spent the best part of two years in a mix of new and older oak, mostly French. Under diam. A dark garnet/maroon, this is a wine of concentration, power and intensity. The nose gives us notes of chocolate and mocha with dried herbs, spices and tobacco leaves, as well as some oak which is well integrated. Impressive balance with a supple texture and fine tannins. There is some serious persistence here. Well structured, this is a very fine McLaren Vale Shiraz from a great year. Great stuff. This is going to drink beautifully for at least ten to fifteen years.

Deep ruby core in the glass. Blueberry, dried herbs, iodine and black pepper aromas. full and powerful palate, loaded with ripe dark berry fruit that is well contrasted by dark spices and meaty undertones. Binding all that intensity are full throttle tannins, firm but in balance so they ensure length and persistence of weight to the long end.
